Best Braces for Adults

When you think of braces, the first thing that comes to mind may be smiling middle schoolers or awkward teenagers. Despite their strong association with adolescents, braces are widely used among adults as well! Whether you have an issue that requires correction or simply wish for a straighter smile, braces are an effective orthodontic treatment for adults. While the basic options are similar for adult and pediatric patients, adults may have different needs and desires to take into consideration when selecting their treatment. Here are our recommendations for the best types of braces for adults.

Treatment Options for Adult Braces

Traditional Metal Braces

Though some adults may wish to avoid traditional metal braces due to their visibility, they remain a cost-effective choice for many patients. Metal braces offer great advantages in terms of comfort and precision, and can be used to completely correct any and all issues in tooth alignment and bite. Patients are frequently pleased with their decision to select metal braces!

Clear Braces

Clear and invisible braces like Invisalign aligners are a very popular choice for adult orthodontic patients because of their comfort and appearance. This option allows patients to improve their smiles without the cosmetic disadvantages of traditional braces. Additionally, this option allows the aligners to be removed for activities like eating, making them convenient and comfortable. Unfortunately, due to their design and construction, clear aligners like Invisalign are not an option for all patients, as they are limited in their ability to correct certain issues. If Invisalign is not an option, other less-visible options such as ceramic and lingual braces may be recommended.

Ceramic Braces

If cosmetics are a concern but clear aligners are not possible due to treatment requirements, cost, or other factors, ceramic braces are another less-visible choice for adult patients. Ceramic braces are constructed similarly to traditional metal braces, but they are made of clear materials. This option is less visible than the traditional option, but offers many of its benefits, including the ability to correct the vast majority of orthodontic issues.

Lingual Braces

Another very effective, almost invisible choice for adult orthodontic patients is lingual braces, which are installed behind the teeth. Like ceramic braces, these are more visible than clear aligners like Invisalign, but will be nearly invisible to friends, colleagues, and acquaintances, making them a great choice for adults.
